State Museum-Reserve Tsaritsyno

Tsaritsyno is the largest historical museum-reserve in Moscow, occupying over 700 hectares. It stands on a rough terrain steeply descending to ponds, thus causing free planning of the palace garden and picturesque character of the palace ensemble itself. The construction of the museum-reserve in the romantic "gothic taste" began in 1775 by Russian architect Vasiliy Bazhenov. However Russian Empress Catherine the Great disliked the unfinished work and the buildings were partially dismantled in 1786. Later, the construction had continued under the direction of Matvey Kazakov (in particular, he built the Great Palace), but after the death of Catherine the Great the construction of the palace ensemble was stopped. For two hundred years the palace ensemble had turned into majestic ruins. Today, the majority of the architectural monuments have already undergone restoration which started in 2005. The restoration of the Grand Palace, formerly ruined, completed in 2007. Large- scale restoration and landscaping of the park is currently carried out. Exhibitions of a local museum demonstrate various pages of Tsaritsyno history and rich collections of arts and crafts.
